Description

Start Date-End Date: 07/07/2007-01/00/1900 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Help reroute a heavily used trail in a scenic setting just minutes from Denver. Description: The wildflower meadows, lush aspen groves, forests and mountaintop views in the Golden Gate State Park area have long been a popular destination. The Ute Indians visited the area to gather pine for tepees, hunt game and collect plants and herbs. For years the area was home to ranching, farming and logging operations. And, during prohibition, the area became a Mecca for moon shiners and bootleggers. Today tens of thousands of visitors hike, bike, ride, and camp in the park's 12,000 acres and miles of trails. Heavy use is resulting in soil erosion and damaged vegetation. VOC returns to Golden Gate Canyon to reroute the North Mule Deer Trail. The reroute requires one and a half miles of new trail construction and will include reworking rock walls, building switchbacks, and removing pesky stumps. Close to the Denver metro area, this project promises a fun outing and rewarding work.
