Description: Extensively gravel-mined for more than 30 years, the 100-year flood plain is now home to more than 225 species of birds including bald eagle, red-tailed hawk and great blue heron. Wildlife includes beavers, muskrats, skunks, raccoons, deer, coyotes and foxes. Lizards, toads, snakes and frogs occur along with 23 species of fish. At one point in time South Platte Park was a large gravel mine. Today this 1200 year flood plain is home to over 225 species of birds such as; bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, and the great blue heron. It also is a habitat for beavers, muskrats, skunks, raccoons, deer, coyotes and foxes. Recently invasive species, most notably Common buckthorn and honeysuckle, have sapped the park of precious water resources with there high moisture based diet. Last year VOC volunteers were able to eradicate a large area invaded by buckthorn in order to revitalize habitat for native plants like the rare native Black Currant. This Year Coors continues it's dedication to outdoor stewardship and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado by participating in a South Platte Park June 10th. Shrubs and other native species will be planted in last years eradication area which will restore and revitalize riparian habitat. This new habitat will also allow birds and other wildlife to return to their old environment.
