Description

Start Date-End Date: 10/22/2009-11/15/2009 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: 2 to 4 volunteers needed for approximately 2 days of work: Description: The Kerber Creek project locations need to be buttoned up for the winter. After a successful season of planting and revegetation, now erosion barriers (wattles) need to be installed at the stream edges at six sites. Volunteers will secure wattles with wood stakes along stream edge out of high water mark. A 4x4 vehicle or truck is not required since the materials are stored at each of the location. **Interested parties should be comfortable dragging 20 lb waddles, using a mini-sleged to hammer in wood stakes, and crossing the river. (Please bring your favorite pair of gloves, orange safety vest, and mini-sledge if you have them. If not, then supplies will be provided.) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Bureau of Land Management and other partners began the Kerber Creek restoration project in 2005. It focuses on repairing damage caused in the late 1800s-mid 1900s from the Bonanza Mining District. Mine wastes containing heavy metals have had detrimental effects on the creek, including death of vegetation, erosion, decreased water quality and death of aquatic life. This is because the metals in tailing piles are mobile in water. The metals are taken up by plant roots with water, and cause plant death. Without vegetation to support the structure of the creek, the creek freely erodes. Additionally, some tailings are highly acidic, and decrease water quality. Phytostabalization is a process that uses lime, limestone, and compost to bind metals and make them less water soluble. This process keeps metals from being incorporated into vegetation.
