Description: Come be part of an exciting new VOC volunteer effort to preserve historic U.S. Forest Service buildings located throughout Colorado national forests! Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, Colorado Preservation, Inc., and the U.S. Forest Service are working together to offer this unique new program, called HistoriCorps. VOC will kick off the HistoriCorps partnership this fall with a small introductory project in Saguache, Colorado, a town of 600 located in Northern San Luis Valley, nestled between the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges. This historic town, founded in the 1870's, is surrounded by the Rio Grande National Forest to the North, East, and West. We'll be restoring two Forest Service buildings built in the 1930's - a bunkhouse where seasonal Forest Service employees live, and a garage which houses Forest Service vehicles and a sign shop. Volunteers will restore and replace deteriorated "vigas," which are large decorative logs that protrude along the rooflines of these historic buildings. No experience is necessary. Preservation experts will be on hand to guide volunteers in the restoration process. We'll finish the day with a dinner provided by Colorado Preservation. The project site is a short walk from the town center where volunteers can find several lodging, entertainment, and dining options. More HistoriCorps opportunities coming soon! VOC is planning a summer 2010 HistoriCorps project at the historic 1920 Alpine Guard Station in the national forest near Lake City, Colorado. Volunteers can sign up to become trained preservation crew leaders, learning how to use hand tools and historic construction techniques. Stay tuned for future VOC HistoriCorps opportunities!
