Working together with the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA), the Bureau of Land Management and the Gateway Canyons Resort, volunteers will create part of an 8-mile trail system that will open public access to some of Colorado' most breathtaking and undiscovered desert landscapes. Certainly a Colorado best kept secret, the remote area surrounding Gateway, Colorado, southwest of Grand Junction, is steeped in ancient history and picturesque surroundings. The landscape is unique to this part of the Southwest, striking in its geology, plant life, and natural and cultural history. You can choose the option of giving up the hard ground and sleeping bag and staying at the area's Gateway Canyons Resort, an oasis of luxury. Think lavish accommodations and complementary recreational activities -- just imagine post-project hot tubs and real beds and a weekend get-away that may also include time for mountain biking, rock climbing and massages! Friday's schedule will feature a half day of volunteering in the morning followed by an outdoor activity in the afternoon. Saturday will be a full day of volunteering. Volunteers will work in the morning on Sunday and finish by noon to allow for travel back home. A limited number of luxury rooms are available for VOC volunteers for $125 a night. Please visit their website at www.gatewaycanyons.com to learn more about the resort. For more information or to book a room, call 866-671-4733 and ask for Tammy. Camping on the resort for volunteers will be free.
