Keystone Gorge is a spectacular narrow canyon, carved by the San Miguel River as it tumbles through Telluride. The gorge's picturesque waterfalls, surrounded by a lush forest of cottonwoods, spruce and alder woodlands, are the headwaters of the San Miguel River, which provides important habitat for migratory songbirds and rare native fish. It is the only corridor between the Telluride Valley and Ilium Valley that provides passage for deer, elk, cougar, and bear. TNC will transfer the forty-acre parcel to San Miguel County Open Space with a conservation easement that will protect the falls and river corridor in perpetuity. Your volunteer service efforts will assist TNC by upgrading and repairing existing hiking trails, allowing safe public access without damaging surrounding riparian habitat. We will also install benches, picnic tables and interpretive signs. Once completed, the trail will provide an extension to the Galloping Goose Trail, enhancing and protecting a valuable recreational resource for the Telluride community and surrounding region.
