Summary:
Description: The Departments of Agriculture and the Interior have joined forces again to observe National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on **Saturday, September 26, 2009**. National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve America's public lands, beginning in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Last September NPLD grew to 110,000 volunteers working at 1,300+ locations across the nation.
:::This year, the San Luis Valley Public Lands Center will focus their NPLD efforts on two areas southeast of Manassa, near the Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in the Pinon Hills. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has deemed this section of the valley as a Wildness Study Area, which means it is only affected by the forces of nature, thus providing a parcel of land that offers outstanding opportunities for solitude as well as primitive recreation, such as hiking, hunting, fishing, and horseback riding.
:::Regrettably, not everyone understands the value and importance of the WSA, so instead of using this land for personal recreation, they have used it as a dumping ground for unwanted items that stretches across miles of land. Dumping trash on these grounds is a combined threat to the natural habitat as well as the innocent wildlife in the area, so the BLM is asking that you lend a hand in cleaning up "your" National Public Lands on Saturday, September 26th.
:::Please come prepared to get dirty, with fashionably worn clothes, sturdy shoes, and work gloves. We will meet at Manassa elementary (5th and Smith) at 8am and carpool from there.
::Tools and work gloves will be provided (if needed), as well as a PIZZA lunch.
::Volunteers will also receive a NPLD t-shirt, free pass to a National Park, and other awards.
