Start Date-End Date: 08/01/2009-08/02/2009 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Description: Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks provide challenge and adventure to thousands of hardy hikers. Mounts Democrat, Lincoln, and Bross are no exception. These peaks are less than two hours from Denver and accessible from 12,000 foot Kite Lake. Unfortunately, due to numerous unmarked mine shafts and a network of unmanaged social trails that cris-cross their way around the peaks, private land owners have denied public access to the peaks since 2006. Since then, work has been under way to reopen the trail to the peaks by finishing one, clearly marked trail. Join VOC and Colorado's high altitude experts, the Colorado 14ers Initiative, to stabilize, reconstruct, and reroute a trail on Mount Democrat in an effort to reopen public access to these cherished peaks. Be part of this exciting Stewardship Adventure by bringing your friends, camping with us at 12,000 feet and finishing the trail. Your efforts and trail building talents will help get these peaks reopened to the public. If all goes as planned, the peaks could officially be reopened this fall.
