Summary: Historicorps - Alpine Guard Station Restoration
Description: Join Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado this summer as we continue our partnership with Colorado Preservation, Inc. and the US Forest Service on a unique public land and historic US Forest preservation project. This year, our project takes us to the Alpine Guard Station in Rio Grande National Forest.
This site played an important role in early Forest Service administration, and was a component of the sheep grazing history of the Western Slope. In the 1920's, the Western Slope was home to the largest sheep grazing industry in the nation and over 1,000,000 sheep were shipped out of Montrose annually. The Alpine Guard Station was built so the Forest Service Ranger could oversee operations associated with permitting and sheep grazing. Parts of the driveway used in moving sheep are still intact, providing the potential for interpreting the trail and the greater cultural landscape.
Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado will team up with HistoriCorps on what should be an exciting new chapter in outdoor stewardship. Volunteers will work to restore several buildings on site during two weeklong work weeks. If a week is too long for you, you can sign up for a minimum of two days rather than the whole week. Restoring the Alpine Guard Station will allow the public to visit the historic property in its original state.
