Summary:
Description: The Rio Grande National Forest's Divide Ranger District is looking for volunteers to help with the restoration of one of its prized campgrounds. This project would be ideal for groups of 5-10 adults who would love to spend a week camping in an absolutely gorgeous part of the San Luis Valley. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Volunteers would be responsible for gathering slash (leftover trimmings) and consolidating them into easily accessible piles that will be removed by way of Forest Service vehicles. Certified sawyers are welcomed to help buck downed trees, otherwise hand tools will be used to section the lumber to make transportation more manageable. Volunteers should be prepared to work hard throughout the week as well as deal with the summer elements. Please bring your favorite tools and work gloves to help make your week more comfortable, but if you don't have your own personal equipment than tools and gloves will be provided. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Big Meadows campground meanders up a mountainside above Big Meadows Reservoir in a series of loops. Big Meadows Reservoir sits on approximately 600 acres of land that is home to a variety of conifers and Aspens that help provide a stunning backdrop for hikes such as Cascade Falls and Archuleta Trail. The reservoir is a no-wake lake, but its boat ramp allows easy put-in access to the water that is full of Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The 53 campsites at Big Meadows will be under construction at the time of your visit but there will be plenty of room to set up personal campsites. Tables, fire grates, vaulted toilets, and hand water pumps are located on site. Sorry, but there are no electrical hookups available. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
