Summary:
Description: Please join the US Forest Service this summer for a genuinely unique volunteer experience. The Rio Grande NF has partnered with Colorado Preservation, Inc. to rehabilitate the historic Off Cow Camp. The Off Cow Camp was built circa 1905 and serves as a culturally significant example of the long lasting relationship between ranchers and the National Forest. Work of volunteers will be instrumental in helping to transform these now dilapidated buildings into a historically accurate lodging facility. Once the horse stable and accompanying buildings are restored they will be available to the public as rental cabins, ideal for equestrian travelers. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Participants will learn methods of log construction, stone foundation repair, roofing, door and window installation that are consistent with the original construction method. For example deteriorated logs will be replaced with similarly dimensioned logs matching the original species and the "barely there" roofing boards will be swapped with rough-sawn lumber and be sheathed with pre-rusted corrugated metal. In addition, crews will be invited to construct a buck-and-rail fence around the site to give it a truly authentic feel. *8/2/10 - 8/6/10 (Log repair on Off Barn *8/9/10 - 8/13/10 (Finish log work on Off Barn and reroof building) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Off Cow Camp is located at an elevation of 10,520 feet; due to this remote location, the site is accessible by foot, horse, or bike, but not motorized vehicles. The volunteer work week will start Monday morning and end at noon on Friday. (Early arrival is encouraged) Camping will be available on site which includes access to an outhouse facility. Work tools and safety equipment will be provided along with 3 meals a day. Don't be surprised if you learn a thing or two about the history of this site as well as gain a little knowledge about historic construction. This project is ideal for groups and families with children over 14 years old. No experience is necessary, although it is preferred. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
