Description

Start Date-End Date: 04/05/2010-05/21/2010 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Description: The Rio Grande National Forest's Divide District could use a hand, or two, helping assemble 172 picnic tables. These brand new tables will be used, in the Creede area, to replace old campground tables that have been worn down over the years by wind, weather, and visitor use. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Table tops come in 6' and 8' lengths. Ideally groups of three will work in harmony to construct individual tables with an approximate assembly time of 45 minutes. This project would be excellent for High School students, scout troops, church groups, retired adults, or anyone who is civically mind. All tools will be provided. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Creede Colorado is rich with history, seeing it's economic and population boom in the 1890's thanks to many rich silver mines and liberal gambling laws. Once upon a time, iconic western characters such as Calamity Jane, Bat Masterson, and Bob Ford (assassin of Jesse James) made their home in this little mountain town. As time moved on so, did the gamblers, and miners began to switch their focus from silver to more lucrative minerals such as zinc, copper, and lead. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The entire town of Creede has been declared a National Historic District but in the 21st century, this charming mountain town is known more for it panoramic scenery and inspirational arts. One magazine has deemed Creede "one of the best art towns in America," so with this killer combination of arts and history, Creede has become one of the more popular tourist destinations in the San Luis Valley. Other nearby sites include the Underground Mining Museum, Bachelor Loop, Silver Thread Scenic Byway, and Wheeler Geologic Area. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ If you are interested in volunteering with the Rio Grande Forest Service between April 5th and May 21st, please contact Rob Santoro at (719) 852-6267 or email Rob@VOC.org Latitude/Longitude: Additional Information: Camping Available: Physical Difficulty: Moderate High Altitude Project: Desired Number of Volunteers: 15 Total Adult Volunteers Attended: Total Youth Volunteers Attended: Total Volunteer Days: Total Unique Volunteers: Total Volunteer Hours: 218 Staff Hours: 0 Stipend Hours: 0 Project Summary: Successes and Challenges: Lessons Learned: Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Description of Accidents/Incidents: Description of Work Completed:
