Summary: Gateway Canyons Trail
Description: Experience one of Colorado's best-kept secrets - the pristine wilderness area surrounding Gateway, Colorado, southwest of Grand Junction. We'll be returning to this picturesque location for a second year to continue efforts to build an 8-mile trail system which will open public access to some of Southwest Colorado's most breathtaking desert landscapes. In 2009, volunteers constructed the Dynamite Trail a new hiking and mountain biking trail from the bottom of John Brown Canyon up to the rim of a small mesa. This year we'll work on 3/4 mile trail connection from the south end of the Dynamite Trail to the Cutler Rim Trail (named for the Cutler formation over which much of the trail traverses). We may also work on a 0.4 mile trail segment connecting the Cutler Rim Trail with the south side of Gateway.
Friday's schedule will feature a half day of volunteering in the morning followed by an outdoor activity in the afternoon. Saturday will be a full day of volunteering. Volunteers will work in the morning on Sunday and finish by noon to allow for travel back home. Volunteers have the option of camping overnight or staying at the Gateway Canyons Resort, a luxurious retreat in the middle of the wilderness. Volunteers will also enjoy catering by the Gateway Canyons Resort and access to the resort pool.
This effort is a collaboration between Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA), the Bureau of Land Management, and the Gateway Canyons Resort.
