Summary: Trail Work
Description: Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) and The Nature Conservancy are hosting a hiking trail maintenance day at Phantom Canyon Preserve.
Today considered one of the last great Front Range landscapes, the Preserve features a spectacular roadless canyon - a rim-to-rim sanctuary encompassing four miles of the North Fork of the Cache la Poudre River. More than 200 bird species and 600 plant species have been recorded in this transition zone between grasslands, foothill shrublands riparian and forested ecosystems. Phantom Canyon Preserve is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy and is surrounded by other private lands. Hence, to visit, you have to join a guided field trip or participate in a volunteer workday.
Volunteers will perform basic trail maintenance on the Preserve's 2 trails: The Rim Trail, an easy 0.6 mile loop through prairie and shrublands with views of the canyon and distant mountain vistas; and the Canyon Trail, which switchbacks from the canyon rim to river canyon floor, dropping 600 feet in elevation over 8 tenths of a mile, where you can stroll along the banks of the Cache La Poudre River.
Volunteers should bring water, sack lunch, and leather work gloves. Wear long sleeves and long pants, sturdy work/hiking boots and a shady hat.
