Summary: Trail Construction & Leadership Training
Description: This month we are partnering with Colorado State Parks to learn about the importance of trail construction and the benefits of having public trail systems. There are many environmental, health and community benefits of having well maintained trail in Colorado. This project is important for this State Park to attract visitors and keep them from wandering onto delicate wildlife habitat. The project site is located on the far western edge of Cheyenne Mountain State Park, on the southern face of Cheyenne Mountain. Despite proximity to Colorado Springs, this project should be considered a "remote" experience. Access to the work site will require a 2.6 mile hike! We will be constructing trail that will allow visitors to access some of the most spectacular places in the park while preserving habitat. This trail will connect the existing trail network within the park to the recently acquired parkland on the summit of Cheyenne Mountain, requiring over 2,000 feet in elevation gain. We will be spending the night on their campgrounds in tents on Saturday night (and Friday if there is demand) and VOC will provide all food except lunch on Sunday when we are at Colorado College for leadership training.
Colorado College's Outdoor Recreation Club is hosting a Leadership Training Clinic for Cairn Sunday morning. The Leadership Training gives students the opportunity to learn, use and teach an array of important outdoor skills. Training in both hard and soft skills enables students to then plan and lead a diversity of outdoor excursions with friends and family. Cairn will learn hard skills such as stove operation and maintenance, tent set-up and repair, backpack packing and fitting, clothing and layering techniques, water purification, Leave No Trace ethics, map and compass orienteering, and trip planning. Soft skill training includes components of leadership, group dynamics and conflict resolution skills.
