Summary: Volunteer at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Colorado's newest state park, nestled in the landscape that inspired the song America the Beautiful.
Description: Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Colorado's newest state park, is nestled in the landscape that inspired the song America the Beautiful. Enter this park and marvel at the mountains above and the Colorado Springs skyline below. The park is also home to a diverse population of plant and wildlife. The stunning transition from peaks to plains means highly diverse transitional zones between mountain coniferous forest and Great Plains grassland communities. Deer, elk, black bear, cougar, coyote, red fox, and prairie dogs are just some of the animals that call the park home. Recently, bobcats and badgers have been seen on a regular basis. With the influx of new visitors to the park it will be important that disturbance to the park's ecology be kept at a minimum. Volunteers will be constructing trail that will allow visitors to access some of the most spectacular places in the park while preserving habitat. This trail will connect the existing trail network within the park to the recently acquired parkland on the summit of Cheyenne Mountain, requiring over 2,000 feet in elevation gain.
The project site is located on the far western edge of Cheyenne Mountain State Park, on southern face of Cheyenne Mountain. Despite proximity to Colorado Springs, this project should be considered a remote experience. Access to the work site will require a 2.6 mile hike.
There is no fee for this project. Free camping is provided Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Free meals are provided beginning with Saturday morning breakfast and ending with Sunday lunch.
