Start Date-End Date: 08/01/2011-08/05/2011 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Restore Duncan Cabin and travel back to the rough and tumble gold mining days of the 1890s! Description: In the rough and tumble gold mining days of the 1890s, Duncan Cabin was part of a mining camp with a population of as many as 2,000 people. Today only the cabin, located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Range and next to Pole Creek, remains to tell the story. It has become the ghost town's hallmark symbol. Volunteers will help restore the log cabin for use as part of the Forest Service cabin rental program; once preservation work is complete, the cabin will be made available for public rental. Volunteers will learn to shape replacement logs, apply chinking and daubing, reroof the building in cedar shingles and install fencing for a corral. This is a great opportunity to help preserve one of the superb cultural and natural landscapes found on the east side of the San Luis Valley. There is no fee for this project. Free food and camping will be provided.
