Summary: Restore Duncan Cabin and travel back to the rough and tumble gold mining days of the 1890s!
Description: In the rough and tumble gold mining days of the 1890s, Duncan Cabin was part of a mining camp with a population of as many as 2,000 people. Today only the cabin, located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Range and next to Pole Creek, remains to tell the story. It has become the ghost town's hallmark symbol.
Volunteers are needed to help restore the log cabin to its original condition, (circa 1890) once the preservation work is complete, this cabin will be available for public rental. During Week 3 volunteers will focus on detail work such as finishing cedar shingling the roof, hanging doors, replacing windows, and finishing the trim work. This is a great opportunity to help preserve one of the San Luis Valley's cultural landmarks while enjoying the Valley's beautify landscapes.
Due to the nature of this project, I'm asking that volunteers commit to all three days. *All meals will be provided and free camping will be available just west of Crestone, CO. If you are a local, and would like to commute home each night, I ask that you return to the campground no later than 8am each morning, so we can commute to the site as a group.
If you are interested in participating please contact Rob at 719.852.6267
There is no fee for this project. Free food and camping will be provided.

Description of Work Completed: On September 16-18, 9 volunteers traveled to Duncan Cabin for a VOC HistoriCorps project. Volunteers restored the historic cabin and surrounding area to the original feel from its mining camp days. They constructed a false ceiling for the cabin, lacquered the floor, glazed all the windows, completed construction of the outhouse, completed dry stack rock foundation around the entire base of the cabin, and installed quarter round around the interior floor of the cabin. Wow! This fun weekend in a spectacular setting was topped off with elk bugling throughout the night along with owl hoots and coyote yelps. Thanks to all the volunteers and HistoriCorps partners for a great weekend!
