Description

Start Date-End Date: 08/20/2011-08/21/2011 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Help build trail at Lake Agnes, a beautiful alpine lake located in State Forest State Park. Description: At 10,500 ft., Lake Agnes is a beautiful alpine lake located in State Forest State Park. The adjacent Nokhu Crags are close enough that rocks routinely crash off the mountain all the way down to and sometimes into the lake. Because the lake has been restricted to fishing by flies and lures only, the cutthroat trout population has thrived and the lake provides fun fishing and fish watching for patient anglers and viewers. With the attractions and easy access, Lake Agnes is also by far the most popular attraction of all of the alpine terrain in this state park. On a summer weekend hundreds of hikers may make the short trip up to the lake. The trail to Lake Agnes was almost totally rebuilt by VOC in 1999. Over a hundred volunteers rerouted about ninety percent of the trail to its present alignment. On this project volunteers will reinforce the trail tread to prevent slippage and to secure sections in their current alignment. Some steps that were built in 1999 or more recently will be rebuilt with less height to make them more inviting to the variety of users on the trail. Volunteers will also be asked to brainstorm possible solutions to shortcuts that have been made on the switchbacks. Most of the work will involve building rock structures, from monowalls to short segments of higher walls. There is no fee for this project. Free camping is provided Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Free meals are provided beginning with Saturday morning breakfast and ending with Sunday lunch.
