Description: THIS PROJECT IS CURRENTLY FULL. Please contact becca@voc.org if you would like to be put on the waitlist. FAMILY FRIENDLY Trees. They green our neighborhoods. They clean our atmosphere. They shade our houses. Help beautify a thriving neighborhood and be a good steward of your city and your planet by planting trees in Denver's Globeville neighborhood. The Globeville neighborhood was originally settled in the late 1880s around the Globe Smelting and Refining Company. Many of the early workers were Eastern European immigrants, including Austrians, Croatians, Germans, Poles, Russians, Scandinavians, Slovenians, and other Slavic peoples. In addition to the smelters, the railroad and packing plant industries offered employment opportunities within the neighborhood. Globeville was originally platted in 1889 and then incorporated as a town in 1891. The City and County of Denver annexed Globeville in 1902. Today, the Globeville Townhomes are home to over 120 residents. The townhomes were built and then renovated in 2005 as part of the Denver Housing Authority's workforce housing initiative which provides first time home buyers the ability to purchase homes in areas where homeownership opportunities are sparse. This project is a collaborative effort between Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado and The Park People to plant over 50 trees in this culturally diverse, low income neighborhood. This is a great chance for youth groups, families and anyone that cares about Denver's communities and Colorado's outdoors to make a difference. There is no cost for this project. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
