Description

Start Date-End Date: 08/27/2011-08/28/2011 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Spend a weekend at Sylvan Lake, a haven for anglers, campers, bikers and hikers Description: Recognized by many as Colorado's most beautiful state park, Sylvan Lake State Park provides a scenic getaway to the White River National Forest, unlimited panoramic vistas and some of Colorado's best trout fishing! Located at an elevation of 8,500 feet, Sylvan Lake is a haven for anglers, campers, bikers and hikers. Join VOC to construct 3/4 mile of a new trail to connect the park's Visitor Center to the Sylvan Lake itself. Once completed, this new trail will be a perfect family-friendly pedestrian and equestrian route for park visitors who seek an alternative to steeper, more intense hiking trails. Stream crossings, bridge construction and interesting route sections make this basic trail project a real challenge! Bring your trail skills and your fly rod! There is no fee for this project. Free camping is provided Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Free meals are provided beginning with Saturday morning breakfast and ending with Sunday lunch. Latitude/Longitude: 39.6469295, -106.9517109 Additional Information: It turned out to be difficult to recruit volunteers for this project (similar to what happened on the 2008 project). Main factor seemed to be low local turnout and the late summer date with a longer trip for front range volunteers. They would like us to come back and finish next year and it would be nice to have a high turnout for that. We should start recruiting and planning for that early. Description of Accidents/Incidents: Description of Work Completed: 65 volunteers spent the weekend of August 27-28 building a trail at beautiful Sylvan Lake State Park. They constructed 1700 feet of trail, built 20 wooden steps and 4 rock steps, and performed some unscheduled maintenance on one of the rock stair cases built by VOC in 2008, which links the group campsite to the trail.
