Summary: Spend National Trails Day at beautiful Vega State Park!
Description: Spend National Trails Day at beautiful Vega State Park! For the third time, VOC volunteers will spend a rewarding weekend at the base of Grand Mesa, the largest flattop mountain in the United States. Volunteers will construct 1.5 miles of new trail around the north side of the Vega Reservoir, the park's centerpiece. At 8,200 feet, Vega boasts a variety of wildlife, views, and recreational opportunities for boaters, anglers, cross country skiers, and backpackers. The new Vega trail will provide access to the most frequently used areas in the park. It will also offer an alternative route to the Vega Reservoir, which is currently accessible by a single trail through the meadows on its south side. Your work will help relieve recreational pressure from the existing trail, preserving nearby natural resources and providing visitors with new opportunities to experience nature.
In addition to working outside in one of Colorado's beautiful state parks, volunteers will be treated to a live band and appetizers on Saturday night.
There is no fee for this project. Free camping is provided Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Free meals are provided beginning with Saturday morning breakfast and ending with Sunday lunch.

Additional Information: The Vega staff was unable to dig a trench in some of the work areas which delayed some of the work. The piles staged to fill in the trench where also short on material. This was a repeat of the issue we ran into last year. Had the trench been dug and the crusher fine piles staged with sufficient amount of crusher the trail would have been completed.

On June 4-5, 52 volunteers spent National Trails Day in beautiful Vega State Park, constructing 1.5 miles of trail around the north side of the Vega Reservoir, the park''s centerpiece. This was the third time VOC volunteers worked at the base of Grand Mesa, the largest flattop in the United States. The new Vega trail now not only provides access to some of the most frequently used areas in the park, but also offers an alternative route to the Vega Reservoir, which was previously accessible only by a single trail through the meadows on its south side. The hard work put in at Vega has helped to relieve recreational pressure from existing trail, preserving natural resources and keeping Colorado beautiful. After the long day
