Summary: Winter Camping Thriving and Surviving and Campground Maintenance
Description: This month we are partnering with expert mountaineer John Aldag, and Phil Headrick from Golden Gate Canyon State Park. John has spent a significant amount of time camping in extreme weather conditions. He is helping with our program because of his expertise and his leadership skills in teaching others about winter camping. The course, "Basic Winter Camping" at the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is taught by John as a volunteer, where participants gain fundamental understanding, equipment and techniques to keep warm in cold environments during an overnight stay. Mentors, alongside John, will cover topics such as dressing, traveling, camp set-up, cooking, and sleeping comfortably in winter. After a day of training, Cairn members will have the option of sleeping inside a cabin/yurt or test their new camping skills by camping just outside the cabins/yurts for a true winter-camping experience. If conditions prove to be too cold and unbearable, students have the option of retreating indoors.
Phil Headrick is Golden Gate Canyon State Park's resource technician. He will be facilitating a service project (weather dependent) on Sunday morning. We will not know the scope of the service project until closer to our project date, but potential projects likely include some sort of park maintenance and construction - whether it is trail building, trash-pick up, weed removal or cabin cleaning. Keep in mind, that weather will be a huge factor playing into the success and execution of this project overall.
