Description

Start Date-End Date: 05/28/2012-06/24/2012 Land Manager Office: USFS - Saguache Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Randy Ghormley Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Conduct general surveys of riparian habitat along Carnero creek to determine species presence, composition, and richness. Description: There are two desired outcomes from this project. 1) Conduct general surveys of approximately 6-7 miles of riparian habitat along Carnero creek to determine species presence, composition, and richness. This equates to general “birding” along the riparian area to determine what species are present, and in their relative frequency. Record all species by sight and sound. 2) Establish and conduct standard point counts based on a line transect adjacent to the riparian zone. The transect(s) will consist of 15 points 250 meters apart, with all species being recorded by sight or sound based on standard point count protocols. The entire survey will take an estimated two to four days to complete. Latitude/Longitude: 37.839186, -106.256086 Additional Information: This is an opportunity most appropriate for a very experienced birder, that can identify the majority of common songbirds found in Southern Colorado by sight and sound. Volunteers will need their own vehicle, binoculars and personal items. A 2-WD vehicle will suffice as the 41G Rd. is graveled. The Forest will provide notepads, clipboards, and training materials to conduct point counts. All volunteers should bring their own safety kits and personal comfort items.
