Originally built as a private residence in 1908, the house has been available for use by Governors since 1960.Today, itis open for scheduled tours and special public events. It's also the location of new vegetable gardens that were first planted by volunteers with Grow Local and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado in 2011. Called the First Family's Giving Garden, produce grown is then donated to area shelters. VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY Join us as we return to the Boettcher Mansion for a second year of working in the First Family's Giving Garden. The beds will be ready for planting thanks to VOC volunteers who prepared them earlier in May. This will be a fun, easy, and child-friendly project involving planting of vegetable seeds and seedlings. Some weeding and turning of the soil may be involved. The plants have been donated by Governor Hickenlooper, and the produce grown will be donated to The Gathering Place, a women's shelter. Same group that caused cancellation of the MPEC Project. They were able to weed some of the garden beds, as none of the plants had arrived for planting. This was also the evening where the Slovenian ambassador's motorcaid was coming and there was an event at the mansion later that night. This was also the evening where 2 film crews came to feature VOC and GLC for their community gardening work. There was a lot going on to say the least. Description of Work Completed: Several garden beds were planted this evening with volunteers from a combination of backgrounds - corporate groups, youth groups, and individuals. This was a media frenzy event, as well as occuring the same evening of a governor's mansion event with the ambassador of Slovenia coming in with his motorcaid. It was a successful evening, with beautiful weather, and volunteers were able to enjoy a pic-nic on the lawn after the project was over sponsored by Chipotle. Local church groups will maintain the garden throughout the season and produce will be donated to local food-banks and shelters. 1.
