VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
Don't miss this unique opportunity to get outdoors and garden while at the same time providing food for those in need. This project is one of several where we'll be planting vegetable gardens in Denver City Parks, with all produce being donated to local organizations including local food banks, homeless shelters, and families in need. We'll head to Urban Peak to grow a vegetable garden. Volunteer work will be fun, easy, and child-friendly. Tasks will involve preparing the garden beds, weeding, working the soil, and planting vegetable seeds and seedlings.

Description of Work Completed:
A successful garden preparation and planting with a hard working youth group! Despite raining conditions, the volunteers showed up for the occasion, worked swiftly to turn the beds to mix topsoil and compost and planted a few vegetables. May of the Urban Peak youth also joined in on the fun in the rain, and will be helping maintain the garden throughout the growing season to provide produce for their at-risk youth center.
1. What were the most significant areas of achievement on this project?
The volunteers spread and tilled 4 yards of top soil in 7 vegetable beds.
2. What areas need improvement from this project? More importantly, what constructive ideas do you have in order to improve these areas? What can VOC’s committees and staff do to implement these improvements?
Since it was raining during the project the tools were very dirty and it would have been useful to have wire brushes or a bucket of water to wash the tools.
3. What did you try new on this project that worked better than on prior projects?
4. How much work was completed? If not 100%, when will it be completed by the agency? Did the agency provide everything they agreed to in the MOU?
The original plan was to spread and till the top soil and plant various vegetables. Due to the weather the volunteers were not able to plant the vegetables because the soil was to compact. The agency provided everything necessary.
5. How did the agency feel at the end of the project?
The agency was happy with the work we completed and impressed with the speed at which the project was finished.
6. Could the agency have better supported the team’s efforts? How?
The agency did a great job.
7. Was this project a good volunteer and crew leader experience (i.e., did the volunteers enjoy themselves and did everything appear seamless)? How might we further enhance their experience?
The volunteers did enjoy their experience in spite of the rain.
