Description:
STEWARDSHIP SITE
The Town of Breckenridge and Summit County jointly own much of the Golden Horseshoe area, which containsover 2000 acres of Town and County managed open space. The area has an extensive existing trail network that crosses through Town and County open space and sections of the White River National Forest. Some of these routes were constructed by miners during the area's historic mining era.
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
Be part of unique effort to help reopen an historic ditch for non-motorized recreational use. The Galena Ditch, originally constructed over 100 years ago to convey water to area mines, will be reopened to accommodate hikers and mountain bikers traveling between the popular Horseshoe Dredge Trailhead and the Colorado Trail. Be a part of history and help improve the trails in the Golden Horseshoe area.

Special Notes:
Stewardship Education:
Kirsten Springer was our stewardship advisor for the project this weekend. She spoke to the volunteers each morning befor breaking into crews. Speaking on the area we were working in, why it was important, and what wildlife we might hope to see on this weekend.
Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers:
Note from Elly:
Randall McKinnen our entertainer for Saturday night loves VOC and did a lot of music for us 5-6-7 years back. Needs to work for financial gain much of the time as this is how he makes his living??but if we are desperate, he would do it for free as he loves VOC and he did free several times in the past. He showed up Sunday morning and helped cook, serve, clean-up and pack-up. Did a lot of the lifting and getting gear on the truck.
Description of Accidents/Incidents:
A family with two children (aged 4 and 7) were asked to leave because of the childrens' age. They should not have been allowed on the project to begin with, but arrived after crews were selected and volunteers were already being shuttled.
Description of Work Completed:
80 volunteers were able to construct 9000 feet of new trail. As a side project, one of the crews carried in stringers for a bridge installation.
