STEWARDSHIP SITE
Tanglewood Trail is a heavily used trail in the southern part of the Mount Evans Wilderness. Of Colorado's Fourteeners, Mount Evans (14,264') is the most accessible and also one of the highest. Tanglewood Trail is well used by many eager to enjoy a lakeside picnic, an afternoon fishing jaunt, or an overnight alpine camping trip.
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
Tanglewood Trail's increasing popularity requires ongoing maintenance and VOC has committed to adopting this trail each summer. Be a part of an ongoing small group of dedicated volunteers and sign up for one or all four 2012 dates. This summer we'll focus on rehabilitating a section of severely eroded trail located above timberline at the base of Mt Rosalie. The erosion is so bad that in some places the trail is 10 feet wide and 3 feet deep. A small group of volunteers will backpack into camp on Friday afternoon and stay through Saturday night. Tools, project materials and project gear will be brought in by the Forest Service. This will be a challenging, remote project with significant reward at the end. As a designated national wilderness area, strict group size limits allow VOC to register only 12 volunteers for each date.

On the weekend of August 25-26, a total of 7 volunteers worked to rehabilitate the Tanglewood Trail in the Mt. Evans Wilderness area. Volunteers backpacked about 2.25 miles in from the Deer Creek trailhead and set up camp on Friday evening. On Saturday and Sunday morning, volunteers had an alpine start and hiked another mile in to work on the Tanglewood Trail. Together, volunteers built close to 75 checks dams from the top of the saddle to the upper intersection of the new Tanglewood trail. Their hard work will help reduce soil erosion on the old trail, and help rehabilitate and restore the trail.
