Summary: Help monitor one of the eleven peregrine falcon nesting sites on the Rio Grande
Description:
The purpose of this service is to determine if the previously identified peregrine nesting sites are occupied during the current year. This is done simply by observing the sites from a distance with a scope or binoculars, taking photographs of the eyrie and recording your observations. Nature of work will depend upon eyrie selected for monitoring. Many can be monitored adjacent to primary roads so all that is needed is a chair, field equipment, and patience.
Although occupancy can be determined on a one-hour or one-day visit, some may take 2-3 days to determine if the eyrie is occupied. If the eyrie has moved to a new location in the same cliff area we would like the volunteer to determine and document that location. Monitoring is best able to achieve objectives when conducted during the latter part of the nestling stage, which will vary for each eyrie based on elevation. We would like the volunteer to record observation notes and prepare a brief report for each visit.
This is a very unique volunteering opportunity that will provide the Forestwith important information about peregrine falcons locally.
