Summary: Help control erosion and protect the land at Black Forest Regional Park after the areas devastating 2013 fire.
Description:
STEWARDSHIP SITE
Black Forest Regional Park is located in the Black Forest area of El Paso County, just north of Colorado Springs. The park's moderately rolling hills, open pine forests, and foothill prairie make it a popular family-friendly destination for hikers, bikers, equestrians, and picnickers.
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
The June 11th Black Forest fire burned 14,000 acres, destroyed 486 homes, and caused $85 million in damages. Black Forest Regional Park was not spared from the destruction and VOC's original 2013 trail project had to be changed due to the damage and changing needs of the area. Post-fire rains have washed away significant amounts of sediment, sending it downhill towards the athletic fields, playground, and other structures. VOC's new plan for the Black Forest project include installing log erosion barriers to slow water and erosion flows which will protect the parks assets downhill of the burn site.

Description of Work Completed:
On August 10th 66 volunteers worked at Black Forest Regional Park in Black Forest CO. The project was originally scheduled as a trail construction project to continue the work accomplished in 2012. Due to the June fire in Black Forest and impact to the park, the project was changed to a fire restoration project. The priority was to slow erosion and flow of sediment that would move towards the ball field, play ground, and other structures during heavy rains. On the day of the project volunteers installed 37 straw wattles, 6 grade stabilizers, 19 check dams, and 57 log erosion barriers. This work will help slow the movement of material during periods of heavy rain and protect the assets that are downhill of the burn area.
