Summary: This month we are partnering with the Town of Fraser and the Headwaters Trails Alliance. The plan for Saturday when we arrive at the Fraser River Trail is to help about 12 of you install gabion boxes and fill them with rock to help protect abutments of bridges along the trail. Overtime, erosion at the base of the bridges abutments can remove material stabilizing the bridge and cause the bridge to be unsafe. The gabion boxes protect against erosion during periods of high flow in the river. The rest of the group will work on trail widening in the same general area, performing basic trail maintenance and address trail cupping and water pooling.
We will work a full day 9:30-4pm on Saturday,
OVERNIGHT PORTION WAS CANCELLED DUE TO FLASH FLOODS
then spend the evening getting to know one another with team-building, icebreakers, and camping activities. Sunday morning will consist of breakfast, perhaps a short hike (depending on how fast we're moving in the morning!), and then depart Fraser to be back to Denver no later than noon on Sunday. Please BRING your own sack LUNCH on SATURDAY.
The mission of Headwaters Trails Alliance is to identify, maintain, and expand an accessible, interconnecting trail system in Grand County for appropriate multi-user groups. Headwaters Trails Alliance (HTA) is a nonprofit advocacy organization for trails in scenic Grand County, Colorado. Surrounded by mountain peaks and passes, Grand County streams are the headwaters of the Colorado River. HTA's primary goal is to provide high quality trails linking towns and recreational areas within Grand County, with secondary trail systems connecting historical, cultural and recreational sites near our communities.
Fraser is a Statutory Town in Grand County, Colorado, United States. The population was 910 at the 2000 census. The town is in Middle Park in the valley of the Fraser River along U.S. Highway 40. Its location northwest of Winter Park, the location of a popular ski resort, has provided growth in recent years with new condominium and other real estate developments. This town is at an elevation of 8550 feet (2601 m) and was established in 1904 in anticipation of the arrival of the Moffat Railroad. It was laid out on the western high bank of the Fraser River by George Eastom and originally named for him, but this name did not stick, for the town soon resorted to the name given the original rural post office: Fraser.
