Description

Start Date-End Date: 08/30/2013-09/02/2013 Land Manager Office: USFS - Divide Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Lisa McClure Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Help restore a severely degraded section of the Continental Divide Trail near Wolf Creek Pass. Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, or the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) for short, runs 3,100 miles between Canada and Mexico. It follows the Continental Divide along the Rocky Mountains and crosses five states in the U.S.: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This stewardship project takes place on the Colorado section of the trail located between South Fork and Pagosa Springs. VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY Because this easy-to-access section of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) connects directly to the road-accessible Lobo Overlook on the divide, it has seen heavy use. This heavy use has had a significant impact on the unstable soil common in areas over 11,000 ft, causing certain sections of the trail to slope dramatically downhill. Because of this, users may struggle to find purchase on the trail, which is a serious safety risk. Volunteers will be working on a section of the CDT that begins a mile north of the Lobo Overlook and will continue working north for approximately two miles. Volunteers will be working to improve drainage above and below the trail to prevent erosion. They will also construct rock walls to stabilize the trail. Volunteers will need to bring their own camping gear. The worksite is approximately one to three miles from the campground and will require a hike and transportation of tools each day. The hike follows a ridge and is not especially strenuous. PARTNERS USFS -- Divide Ranger District OTHER FUN STUFF Camping: Free camping will be available.
