Start Date-End Date: 07/20/2013-07/21/2013 Land Manager Office: USFS - Salida Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Ben Lara Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Help convert a section of the Continental Divide Trail that was once an unsustainable logging road into a natural, healthy trail. Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, or the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) for short, runs 3,100 miles between Canada and Mexico. It follows the Continental Divide along the Rocky Mountains and crosses five states in the U.S.: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This project is located just a few miles west of the historic town of St. Elmo (one of Colorado's best preserved ghost towns), below the rough and rugged Tincup Pass. VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY The existing CDT in the area is an unsustainable trail built primarily on an old logging road. Volunteers will be restoring and improving an approximately mile-long section, creating a sustainable, natural trail. This aesthetically-pleasing, environmentally-conscious improvement will ensure the trail for future generations of visitors. Volunteers will build reclamation structures to promote natural re-growth on the closed logging road and construct checks and drains to prevent erosion. Once these structures are completed, volunteers will naturalize the road with rotten logs, stumps, forest debris etc. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Please note that the access road to the work site is about 4 miles long and requires a high-clearance 4X4 vehicle. If you do not have a high-clearance vehicle but would still like to volunteer on this project, please email us at voc@voc.org or call the VOC office at 303-715-1010.
