Description

Start Date-End Date: 04/22/2013-04/22/2013 Land Manager Office: BLM - San Luis Valley Land Manager Contact: Joe Lewandowski Funding Partner: BLM - Saguache Field Office Programmatic Partner: Summary: Multi partner Earth Day project/event including the BLM, CPW, RiGHT, and Monte Vista Middle School. Description: This is a new CPW wildlife area on the banks of the Rio Grande that is currently in the SLV spotlight. It is a memorial to Doug Shriver and Ray Wright, two SLV fixtures who passed away 2 years ago. There will be an actual memorial on site but the site itself is a memorial to the ideals of the two men. It is meant to be a place that schools can utilize for field trips and experiential ed, showcase an agriculture and wildlife interface and highlight responsible water use. One of the major partners is the Rio Grand Headwaters Land Trust, RGHT that asked the BLM to help, which is why I'm involved. The BLM donated approx. $16000 to be used for SCC Crews to build a trail around the new area. What's left over out of that $16000 after the crews are paid for will to go to VOC via CYCA for my coordinating efforts. So far I have done most of the coordination with SCC and planned/coordinated a big Earthday Event with approx. 75 students and teachers from Monte Vista Middle School. The event will combine several activities and lessons revolving around environmental ed and stewardship. The sessions were led by SCC crew leaders, CPW staff, and members of RIGHT. Lunch for everyone involved was provided by RIGHT. In the afternoon the students were split into 2 groups, one group helped CPW with a variety of tasks including trash and slash pick up and the other group continued to help SCC build a 5' wide trail in the Wildlife Area. SCC will be there for the rest of the week to finish the trail that is approx. mile long/ My role in the project was coordinating all of the different elements of the Earth day event.
