Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE Observatory Park, home to the University of Denver's historic Chamberlin Observatory, is a small but open park tucked out of sight just east of the DU campus. In addition to the Observatory which hosts public events from time to time, the park features an extensive playground area, open fields perfect for picnicking or a pickup game of Frisbee. VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY VOC islooking for volunteers to perform one final harvest before putting the new gardens to rest for the winter. This project is one of several where we will be wrapping up the gardening season for those Denver City Park vegetable gardens planted in the spring. As with other Grow Local Colorado gardens, the produce harvested from this project will be donated to organizations that help individuals in need. So far, over 2,900lbs of food have been produced by our urban gardens! Volunteer work will be fun, easy, and child-friendly.Tasks will involve harvesting, weeding, and raking the soil one final time. Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Cold, wet evening! Had some no-shows likely do to weather. Site is tricky, because it's so small - max of 10-12 volunteers, but then if you have 3 no shows, it makes for a pretty tiny project. Description of Accidents/Incidents: None Description of Work Completed: 7 volunteers contributed 21 hours of service on Thursday, October 10th to help harvest and prepare a small garden bed at Observatory Park in Denver. The volunteers were able to collect 1lb of turnip, 2lbs of beets, 3lbs of cabbage, 11.5lbs of kale, 17lbs or chard, and 18lbs of collard greens! Add all that up, and our volunteers in collaboration with Grow Local Colorado were able to donate over 52lbs of fresh, local produce to communities in need. Volunteers worked swiftly in the rain and enjoyed a delicious donated Chipotle Burrito for dinner before heading home to warm up their cold feet and hands. VOC has their final garden harvesting project at Urban Peak next week! 2014 is slated to have 5 garden planting and harvest projects as well - be sure to register early when they are posted early next year, as these particular volunteer spots fill up quick!
