Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE William Frederick Hayden Park, situated atop Green Mountain, has grown since the initial parcel of land was generously donated by the Hayden Family in 1972. Now withmore than2,400 acres of open space, it is the second largest park in Lakewood. The park features a network of multi-use trails, many of which lead to the summit of Green Mountain which, at 6,800 ft (1320 ft above the City of Lakewood), offers stunning vistas of both the Denver metropolitan area to the east and the Rockies to the west. Once home to the buffalo, this parkstill provides a rich habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY We will be building a reroute for a portion of the Rooney Valley Trail that is presently too steep and eroding daily. This will allow access to the entire park and help prevent runaway erosion. The reroute will be approximately half a mile, and in addition to trail construction, work will consist of shrub removal, revegetaton, closure of the original trail, and some bridge-building. Participants were able to build 1,300 feet of new trail in about 4 hours, which is staggering production. Lightening in the area chased volunteers off of the mountain right after lunch, but people seemed to leave with a sense of accomplishment and enthusiasm for trails.
