Summary: Come help preserve Guffey Gorge, home to Colorado's favorite swimming hole.

STEWARDSHIP SITE
Nestled amidst the towering granite cliffs of Guffey Gorge lies what the locals affectionately call Paradise Cove. Once a local secret, this swimming hole has seen its popularity skyrocket over the past few decades. Now it sees as many as 300 people a day on summer weekends and around 20,000 people per year!
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
Not surprisingly, such popularity has had a dramatic impact on the landscape of Guffey Gorge. Impatient visitors often shortcut the trail creating social trails which attract yet more shortcutting causing severe erosion. Erosion has not only made accessing the swimming hole difficult, but has also led to a dramatic increase in sediment in Fourmile Creek, hurting aquatic ecosystems and swimmers alike. In 2008 VOC volunteers rebuilt the social trail leading to the swimming hole and rehabilitated user created trails. This year, VOC returns to restore the Guffey Gorge trail once and for all. Volunteers will rebuild the trails leading to the swimming hole to prevent further short-cutting. There will also be extensive rock work.
