Summary: Immerse yourself in the world of mountain biking by helping to construct new trail in the Limekiln System near Del Norte in the San Luis Valley.
Description:
STEWARDSHIP SITE
Del Norte, known as the "Gateway to the San Juans", is a popular recreational destination in southwestern Colorado. Of its many trails is the Limekiln Trail, named for the 100 year-old limekilns it passes. It is a popular biking trail, offering beautiful vistas of the San Juan Mountains, the Sangre de Cristos, and the surrounding landscape of the rugged San Luis Valley.
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
Help celebrate National Public Lands Day! Over the years, numerous social trails have been created along the length of the Limekiln trail, making the trail both difficult to follow and a danger to the health of the surrounding habitat. Volunteers will close user-created trails and construct a new, sustainable trail. Volunteers will replant and restore user-created trails to discourage further use. They will also construct new trail with the occasional armoring and rockwork. The volunteer work will be part of the BLM's efforts to increase mileage and improve mountain biking trails in and around the San Luis Valley. The new trail will provide recreational opportunities to the youth and residents of the area, as well as benefit regional tourism. The trail will also be utilized by the Adams State University Cycling Team for training and competitions.
