Description

Start Date-End Date: 10/12/2013-10/12/2013 Land Manager Office: City and County of Denver - Parks and Recreation Land Manager Contact: Bob Finch Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Come for the much-needed trail restoration in Pence Park, stay for the picnics. Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE Pence Park-one of the Denver Mountain Park System's so-called "Picnic Parks"-is a beautiful, quiet respite just thirty minutes from Denver. Despite its designation, hikers and bikers will find that Pence Park is no picnic, for it has a plethora of trails able to get the heart pumping. Mountain bikers for one flock from miles around to ride from Lair O' the Bear to Pence Park, a scenic 13 miles. Not to mention Pence Park's unique array of wildlife which includes: bald eagles, Mexican spotted owls, the Preble's jumping mouse, and the Townsend's big eared bat. VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY While the park has much to offer, the current layout of the central Pence Park trail contains steep grades which have experienced severe erosion detrimental to both the utility of the trail and, more importantly, the native habitat. Therefore, we will be returning for a second year to reroute (and build where necessary) approximately 1000 feet of trail. The new route will offer bucolic views, provide a safe, sustainable route for visitors, and help preserve the natural landscape and ecosystem. Specifically, work will consist of basic trail construction with some rock work.
