Summary: Help Black Forest Regional Park recover from the state's most destructive fire on record.
Description: 30th ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE PROJECT
This year Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado turns 30! This project is one of nine 30th Anniversary Commemorative Projects we are hosting to highlight VOC's long-standing history caring for Colorado's outdoors.
STEWARDSHIP SITE
Black Forest Regional Park is located in the Black Forest area of El Paso County, just north of Colorado Springs. The park's moderately rolling hills, open pine forests, and foothill prairie make it a popular family-friendly destination for hikers, bikers, equestrians, and picnickers.
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
In 2013, the state's most destructive fire on recordburned 14,000 acres, destroyed 486 homes, and caused $85 million in damages.Black Forest Regional Park was not spared from the destruction and the fireshut down a VOC trail construction project, forcing the Park to shift gears from planning new trails to fire restoration after post-fire rains washed away significant amounts of sediment, sending it downhill towards the athletic fields, playground, and other structures. This effort demonstrates VOC's commitment to not only our long-time partners, but also to ongoing restorative work.VOC volunteers will help the park recover by installing log erosion barriers and other erosion control structures to slow water and erosion flows, protecting the park assets downhill of the burn site.
