Special Notes:
Stewardship Education: In addtition to getting an intorduction to basic outdoor steardship tools and methods, Volunteers learned about the role of fire and the management of invasive species in Colorado.
This project was done in partnership with Colorado Young Leaders, who provided leadership curriculum, and led the overnight and recreational aspects of the two-day excurision.
Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: I think this type of project worked well for a large HS group. Students stayed on task most of the day, and had an overall enjoyable experience. They got a solid sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, when they saw all the debris they collected in one big pile. There was also lots of excitement around working togehter to come up with the best way to remove some of the larger burnt strucutres, some of which were vertical poles half buried in the ground.
CYL (Nicole Mahobian) is also a great partner in terms of providing outdoor leadershiop curriculum.
Description of Accidents/Incidents:
Description of Work Completed: 52 youth and 7 adults from the Denver Waldorf School performed a day of Fire Restoration at Lory State Park's equestrian jumps in the southern end of the park. 3 VOC volunteers also Crew Lead.
Volunteers removed burnt debris from 22 equestrian jump sites spread throughout the S. Valley of Lory State Park. This will go a long way towards helping the park rebuild this unique facility, and will also help to restore the area.
Volunteers also spent some time removing invasive Common Mullein.
