Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE In the early 1900s Denver residents would ride a trolley or hop on their mules to the mountains west of the city for much needed outdoor respite and recreation. Recognizing the importance of protecting and preserving these scenic mountain recreation areas, then Mayor Robert Speer established the Denver Mountain Park system, requiring an Act of Congress and State legislation to fund the park system. Today, that system includes 46 mountain parks and more than 14,000 acres of parklands in the mountains and foothills of Jefferson, Clear Creek, Douglas, and Grand counties in Colorado, west and south of Denver. VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY VOC volunteers will play an important role in constructing a new trail to expand access to the Patrick House Bison Viewing Area, providing opportunities for bison viewing and education. Volunteers will work to construct a natural surface trail in the area, that will lead visitors around the local bison habitat.
