Summary: Restore a high alpine trail and experience the grandeur of Lake Agnes.
Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE
The Lake Agnes Trail is in the State Forest State Park. The trail begins at the site of the Agnes Cabin, which is on the National Historic Register, in the shadows of the Nokhu Crags, a spectacularly unique peak reaching nearly 13,000ft. The trail leads hikers through open sub alpine meadows filled with wildflowers and wildlife, into dense Spruce forests, winds through rocky outcroppings and eventually guides you to the shore of Lake Agnes. All the while you have views of mountains in both the Never Summer Mountain Range and the Medicine Bow Mountain Range.
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
This trail is continuing to become more popular. At times, during peak season, the parking lot is overflowing with cars and the trail is heavily used. This resource is popular with hikers and fisherman during the summer and snowboarders, skiers, and people on snowshoes during the winter. This project should protect this trail against damage due to wear and tear of users. We should be able to better delineate the trail in an effort to diminish shortcuts and emphasize Stay the Trail.
The trail is less than a mile long. The whole trail has sections that can be maintained and improved. More steps can be added, critical edge can be improved, tread and slope can be fixed, and structures can be added. At the destination many social trails can be replaced with one trail that is easily navigable in order to reduce wear and tear. There are sections at the destination that could use structures as well.
This project has steep sections of trail and the lowest point in elevation of the project is 10,300ft. Most of the project will be accomplished with hand tools.
