Description: STEWARDSHIP SITE
Tanglewood Trail is a heavily used trail in the southern part of the Mount Evans Wilderness. Of Colorado's Fourteeners, Mount Evans (14,264') is not only one of the most accessible but also one of the highest. The Tanglewood Trail is well used by many eager to enjoy a lakeside picnic, an afternoon fishing jaunt, or an overnight alpine camping trip.
VOLUNTEER PROJECT - WHAT & WHY
Tanglewood Trail's increasing popularity requires ongoing maintenance and VOC has committed to adopting this trail each summer. Be a part of an ongoing small group of dedicated volunteers and sign up for one or all five 2014 dates. This summer we'll focus on rehabilitating a two mile section of severely eroded trail starting at the trailhead. Volunteers will put in steps and water bars as needed, and will also clean out existing water bars. Access to the work site will require a 1-2 mile hike.

Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers:
Description of Accidents/Incidents:
Description of Work Completed: VOC schedule several work days on the Tanglewood Trail in the Mt. Evans Wilderness Area for summer 2014. The scope of work was anticipated to repair damage to the trail due to significant water damage due to flooding that took place in September 2013.
VOC volunteers constructed the following to repair flood damage in 2014:
one 20 foot stream crossing using native rock materials
repaired 35 feet of tread that was damaged when Tanglewood Creek overflowed its bank and turned the trail into a new channel
repaired 12 steps that were displaced due to flooding
built new 21 water bars and dips to remove water from the trail
The majority of volunteers had never worked on any trail before and were surprised at the amount work that is required to maintain trails. When the day was over all had a deeper appreciation of trails and the work involved. They now can hike "any trail in Colorado guilt free" know what it takes to maintain trails on Public Lands.
With the significant cutback of USFS Trail Crews in the Mt Evans Wilderness Area, VOC volunteers have filled the void. The volunteers could see at the end of the day the impact of their labor to add to the sustainability of the Mt. Evans Trails. Particularly, due to the trail damage from the floods and the rehab of the tread and construction of major structures to remove water from the trail.
It was funny all of the volunteers were smiling and laughing as they arrived at the trail head knowing that they made a difference.
2014 represented the 8th year that VOC has had a presence on the Tanglewood trail. The majority of work has been accomplished during these years. The trail will be sustainable in its present state for years to come.
