Project Summary: On Saturday, November 7th, 8 adult and 10 youth volunteers came out to Green Mountain in Lakewood from the Cherry Creek Challenge School. The school was hosting a volunteer day with several organizations, and VOC was honored to be a part of the day. The hard working volunteers were able to cover 3 acres of land on Green Mountain, and remove TONS of mullein, a C list noxious weed! They were able to get 3 truckloads removed. Mullein seed heads can contain over 10,000 seeds, which are viable for several year, so clipping the seed heads is ESSENTIAL to stopping the spread of mullein. The day ended with a hard-earned lunch, and stewardship education talk, with prizes!
Successes and Challenges: The mom from the Challenge School that I worked with, Julia Toll, to plan this event was a little difficult to work with. And since it was an optional day of service, not as many people showed up as expected. However, they paid us and still knocked out way more work than expected.
