Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE The beautiful Observatory Park, home to the University of Denver's historic Chamberlin Observatory, is a small yet open park tucked out of sight just east of the DU campus. In addition to the landmark Observatory which occasionally hosts public events, the park features an extensive playground area and vast open fields perfect for picnicking or a pickup game of Frisbee. ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER PROJECT Volunteers of all ages will spend a fall evening performing one final harvest before putting the new gardens to rest for winter. This project, in partnership with Grow Local Colorado, is one of several where we will be wrapping up the gardening season at vegetable gardens that were planted in the spring. The produce harvested from this project will be donated to organizations that help individuals in need. Volunteer work will be fun, easy, and child-friendly.Tasks will involve harvesting, weeding, and raking the soil. Free dinner will be provided. The volunteers made short work of the garden, and harvested 57 lbs of produce! This brought the season long total to 181 pounds of veggies for this particular garden. All the food was donated to the University Church of Christ's food pantry, located 2 blocks away from the garden. Successes and Challenges: It was nice having only 5 volunteers for the harvest-- we still finished by 6 PM.
