Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE The Poudre Learning Center is a premier facility for interdisciplinary learning focusing on the importance of history, science, economics, stewardship and aesthetics of the Cache la Poudre River and Northeastern Colorado. This 65-acre site is situated along the Poudre River and the Poudre River Trails in northwest Greeley and is easily accessible from the surrounding towns of Windsor, Loveland, and Fort Collins. ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER WORK This restoration project is a fun way to get your hands dirty in the soil by planting native grasses, perennials and shrubs. Volunteers will help to create a "wildscape", which is a natural, sustainable landscape designed in mind to attract and benefit birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. Bring the whole family and enjoy this great community planting event! PARTNERS The Poudre Learning Center OTHER FUN STUFF Meals: A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The group was able to plant 270 native plants, which included milkweed and other pollinator plants, remove 2 acres of invasive weeds, and remove 400 feet of an old weed barrier tarp. The group worked very hard in the hot sun, and was rewarded with a delicious Father's Day lunch. Successes and Challenges: It was really hot, and the PLC doesn't have any shade. We brought a lot of water, and a pop-up tent which were essential. We had some fun activities planned to go along with lunch, but everyone was too hot and tired to participate. Maybe do those earlier in the day as a "break time" activity. Lessons Learned: This project was full, with a waitlist, however, a large group canceled, and we didn't quite get the numbers we were hoping for. But the Sunday project actually seemed pretty popular, which was neat. Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Provided by myself and PLC staff member. There was also a member of the Audobon of the Rockies present, who was knowledgeable about why native plants were helpful to bees and butterflies. Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: We did have a few locals from the Greeley area, but if we are going to continue having projects in Weld County, we should try to get more locals. It is a further drive for those from Denver. Description of Accidents/Incidents: Description of Work Completed:
