Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE
Located near Deckers, the popular Goose Creek Trail provides access into the southeast portion of the Lost Creek Wilderness. In the warmer months, the Goose Creek Trail area is glittered with wildflowers and offers the best in camping, fishing in Goose Creek, and remarkable views of formations of red Pikes Peak granite. Unfortunately, the torrential rains in September 2013 triggered serious deterioration of the Goose Creek Trail.
ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER WORK
Volunteers will perform maintenance caused by the flooding, as well as correct areas of the trail experiencing steep grades which are subject to erosion. Work will include constructing drainage structures using rock, re-establishing treadand outslope, and cleaning out and reinforcing existing drainage structures, among other tasks. A U.S. Forest Service member will be a part of each project crew in order to safely clear fallen trees that inhibit the use of the existing trail.

Project Summary: The Lost Creek Wilderness is one of the best spots in all of Colorado when it comes to wildflower viewing, fishing and wilderness camping, but unfortunately the area was badly damaged by the torrential rains in September 2013. Restoring the flood damage and placing barriers to control future water erosion is crucial in keeping the Goose Creek Trail open as one of the most popular access routes to this wilderness area. Many of the 21 volunteers completed the hike in on Friday evening, eager to wake up fresh on Saturday morning for the two days of work ahead of them. By the time Sunday afternoon came around, the team had built an entire section of new trail, installed 15 check dams, and restored the existing trail in many places. Thanks to all the hard work, the Goose Creek Trail is already getting positive feedback from backpackers in the area!
