Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE
The Long Canyon Trail is a favorite and historic trail of the Boulder community. It has tremendous biodiversity and is home to many extremely rare species, including the southern-most stand of paper birch in North America - left over from the Ice Age! The unique topography creates an environment with higher moisture and cooler temperatures than most foothill canyons in the area.
ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER WORK
Volunteers will be broken into small crews to construct an upper portion reroute of the Long Canyon Trail. The Long Canyon Trail will ultimately provide a sustainable alternative to the existing trail and prevent further erosion into the riparian habitat that harbors so many rare and imperiled species. Once complete, the new trail is expected to be approximately 2,500 feet long.
A free light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
OTHER WAYS TO HELP
It's not all sweat and toil! There are lots of ways you can participate on project days, including as an assistant crew chef. Assistant crew chefs have a fun, vital, and very appreciated role on the project team - keeping volunteers happy and well-fed! Please emailSteve Wallfor more information.

Project Summary: Overall the project was quite successful, we had an almost 100% volunteer turnout and were on trail at the expected time.
Successes and Challenges: The execution of the project was very smooth with great volunteer leadership support and strong support from Boulder OSMP. The greatest challenge came from volunteer leaders expecting to do more. The Boulder staff was very much in control of the project, and while this made for a general positive volunteer experience it did make our leaders feel unnecessary on trail.
Lessons Learned: With Boulder OSMP if they choose to maintain tight control as they did for this project we must establish expectations well in advance for volunteer leaders so as to avoid them feeling unnecessary.
