Summary: Spend the weekend building a recreational trail while soaking in the scenery of the majestic San Juan Mountains.
Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE
While not as well-known as nearby Telluride and Ouray, the quaint and historical town of Ridgway is a welcoming community that began as a railroad town. Ridgway is often coined "Gateway to the San Juans" because it is nestled in the picturesque Uncompaghre Valley and surrounded by the glistening Cimarron and San Juan mountains, some of the most photographed peaks in the world. Wildlife is ample in the area; deer, elk, bears, coyotes, and eagles are all a common sight around Ridgway. Why not make a vacation out of your volunteer experience? Ridgway is a premier spot for outdoor recreation!
ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER WORK
This project is designed to improve access to trails in the Ridgway area. For the second consecutive year, VOC will help complete a new mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian trail close to the town of Ridgway. Since the first VOC project last May, mountain biking traffic has increased greatly and the trail system is quickly becoming known as one of the best places to ride. Volunteers will hike into the work area about .5 mile and continue where last year's project left off. Construction involves building new trail and rock walls to help hold the trail in place. The weekend isn't all hard labor, though: Friday and Saturday nights will provide a unique opportunity to relax after the work day and camp in a festive atmosphere with fellow volunteers.
Free meals and camping will be provided.
OTHER WAYS TO HELP
It's not all sweat and toil! There are lots of ways you can participate on project days, including as an assistant crew chef. Assistant crew chefs have a fun, vital, and very appreciated role on the project team - keeping volunteers happy and well-fed! Please emailSteve Wallfor more information.

Project Summary: On the weekend of June 13th, 50 volunteers spent time working on the BLM access trail to its network of hiking and biking trails. This project was a continuation of last year's efforts to establish this trail. Volunteers constructed six climbing turns and improves over 800 ft of trail. Their weekend efforts enabled the BLM to open the trail to allow users to start accessing the trail system on top. This trail is extremely important to all users which allows legal public access to the BLM single track non-motorized trail system.
